Protests and marches: letting the police know.

If there’s no march involved
If there’s no march organised as part of your protest, you don’t have to tell the police. Sometimes statics gatherings spontaneously march, so you can't always prepare.

Marching
By law you must tell the police in writing 6 days before a public march if you’re the organiser.

Tell the police the:

  • Date and time of the march route

  • The names and addresses of the organisers

The police have the power to:

  • Limit or change the route of your march

  • Set any other condition of your march

  • If you arrange a march at short notice, you must still tell the police as soon as you can.

The police can also:

  • Change the location

  • Limit how long a rally lasts

  • Limit the amount of people who attend

  • Stop a sit-down protest if it blocks road traffic or public walkways

We will be putting out information packs regarding guidelines, legal and advice on pages and groups soon. Please contact the wave page via inbox and we will do our best to resolve any upcoming issues

Pack 2: Legalities of A General strike.

A general strike (or mass strike) is a strike action in which a substantial proportion of the total labour force in a city, region, or country participates.

General strikes are characterised by the participation of workers in a multitude of workplaces, and tend to involve entire communities. General strikes first occurred in the mid-19th century, and have characterized many historically important strikes. General strikes have been done in order to seek "democracy, political representation and the provision of basic education and healthcare".Ralph Chaplin, editor of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) newspaper Solidarity and later, of the Industrial Worker, identified four levels of general strike,

* A General Strike in a community.

* A General Strike in an Industry.

* A national General Strike.

* A revolutionary or class strike—the General Strike.

Legal advice received by Unite suggests a general strike could be legal under human rights legislation if it were called as part of a political - rather than a trade - dispute.

Although ‘general strikes’ are not banned per se (they were for a brief period after the General Strike of 1926), strikes are only lawful when they are called in contemplation or furtherance of a trade dispute. A ‘trade dispute’ has to be between ‘workers and their employer’ and must concern the objects of collective bargaining.

The International Labour Organization has consistently held that strikes of a political nature aimed at seeking solutions to economic and social policy questions fall within the scope of the principle of freedom of association enshrined in ILO Convention 87. Not only has the UK ratified this convention, it is considered to be a Core Convention binding all ILO member states by virtue of membership. It can therefore be concluded British unions have a public international law right to call protest or general strikes.

Pack 3: TEMPLATE LETTER FOR UNIONS.

Please edit as needed.

[DATE}

REF: General Strike.

[CITY TOWN] [PLACE OF WORK] optional

Dear [NAME OF UNION]

On the 17th of March a petition was started to request unions to support the July 2016 general strike. Those listed would have received emails alerting them to this. So far over 10,000 people have signed this petition and not only expect, but deserve a response. To date two unions responded and has offered support towards this much needed call of action.

The typical activities of a trade union include providing assistance and services to their members, collectively bargaining for better pay and conditions for all workers, working to improve the quality of public services, political campaigning and industrial action. We would like to encourage you to do what unions were meant to do and represent your members, and as you are fully aware many of your members are currently not happy with many factors.

The reason I feel strongly about this and would like my Union to take action is...[FILL IN ACCORDINGLY].

Nurses, Doctors, Firefighters, Carers, Teachers, Students, Steel workers, Tube workers and many many more stand side by side in this effort, to fight against the poor conditions bestowed on the people due to this time of austerity.

We believe this will define the role of unions by the way they choose to approach the PEOPLE's call for a General Strike, If left ignored the people you represent are not gaining the assistance union profess to give. We expect your rapid response and hope you choose to join those you represent on the 4th of July in the general strike.

Yours sincerely
[NAME] or [THE PEOPLE]
